Press Release India supports construction of a drinking water facility project at a school in Pha Oh temple, Luang Prabang Province
India supported construction of a drinking water facility at a school in Pha Oh temple, Luang Prabang Province. The handover ceremony of the project was held on 28 July 2023. The Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] for this project was signed in December 2021. The project will make clean drinking water available to about 500 students of the school, teachers and many villagers living close to the school. Most Venerable Onkeo Sitthivong, Chair of Luang Prabang Buddhist Fellowship Office; Dr. Chanpheng Southivong, Vice President, Lao Front for National Development; Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; Mr. Prashant Agrawal, Ambassador of India to Lao PDR presided over the ceremony. Representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lao PDR; Luang Prabang provincial authorities, villagers were also present.
2. The project is supported through the Government of India’s Quick Impact Project (QIP) scheme under Mekong-Ganga Cooperation. QIP are projects with short gestation periods that directly benefit local communities, with results that are immediate and visible, which contribute significantly to economic and social development and improvement of public welfare and most importantly and give impetus to the existing good bilateral relations between our two countries. So far, 16 Quick Impact Projects have been implemented/under implementation in Laos in the fields of agriculture, education, health, water facility and IT.
3. India and Laos share long-standing religious, cultural, and people-to-people linkages going back long into history. Since 1956, when diplomatic relations between our countries were established, India’s development cooperation includes—capacity building through Indian Technical and Economic (ITEC) Programme and long-term scholarships for higher studies, projects under lines of credit or soft loans, joint Lao-India centres for English language training, Centre of Excellence for Software Development and Training, and entrepreneurship development, and a unique heritage conservation project of restoration of UNESCO World Heritage site, the iconic Vat Phou (an ancient Shiva temple, originally), by the Archaeological Survey of India deputed under the ITEC Programme.
4. Shri Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East), Government of India and Ambassador of India H.E. Prashant Agrawal reiterated India’s commitment to support Laos in its development journey.
5. Dr. Chanpheng Southivong, Vice President, Lao Front for National Development thanked the Government of India for providing assistance for the implementation of the project.
