Press Release
Celebration of the 73rd Republic Day of India
(26 January 2022)
India celebrates 26 January every year as Republic Day (the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, after India became an independent country on 15 August 1947). Subsequently, India started establishing diplomatic relations with countries across the world.
India and Lao PDR established diplomatic relations on 02 February 1956 and the two countries marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year. The close friendly and mutually supportive relations between India and Lao PDR go back long into history and are based upon deep cultural, religious and people-to-people linkages, as ancient civilisations. Wat Lao (monastery) of Lao PDR in Bodha Gaya (Buddhagaya) in India was established in 2011, not far from the Mahabodhi Temple, where Buddha had attained enlightenment.
In contemporary times, the role played by India as Chairman of the International Commission for Supervision and Control on Indo-China has also reinforced ties.
To mark the 73rd Republic Day, in the morning of 26 January 2022, a Flag Hoisting Ceremony was held at the Embassy of India premises. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ceremony saw participation only of members of the Embassy. However, it was live streamed on YouTube and Facebook pages of the Embassy. After unfurling of the Indian Tricolour Flag, the Ambassador of India H.E. Mr. Dinkar Asthana read out the address of H.E. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India to the nation.
